Cognitive Theory And Teaching Vocabulary Enhancement For...

Over the years, vocabulary has become increasingly important in the content areas such as English, social studies, mathematics and science. Vocabulary knowledge and comprehension is crucial. Although there are many different causes for students’ shortfalls in reading comprehension, there are a variety of strategies to improve these deficits (Biemiller, 2006). This paper looks at the many studies performed on strategies for vocabulary enhancement for various types of learners, as well as instructional methods used to increase comprehension in the content areas. When considering vocabulary knowledge and comprehension in the content areas, the cognitive theory suggests that readers learn through written language. Cognitive theory is the study of how people think, comprehend, and know (Fresch, 2008). Learning involves transforming information into knowledge stored within the mind of the student. Prior knowledge has shown to affect the comprehension, interpretation, and recall of w ritten and oral texts (Alvermann, Smith, Readence, 1985). Likewise, a collection of adjustable methods can be used to increase comprehension during the reading process. Teaching vocabulary methods to aid in students’ understanding of the material may be necessary as they enter grades in which they are dealing with more content-laden vocabulary (Glende, 2013).
